Curated Creativity & Vintage Treasures

About the artist

Hi, my name is Kim. I love my husband of over 40 years, I love my grown children, and I love Jesus, my Lord and Savior. I am the creator and artist in residence for Leather Butterflies. I grew up in Northwest Arkansas, but have called Oklahoma home since I got married. I have always had an appreciation for old things. I love decorating and entertaining, and I love to repurpose old things to new life. These I inherited from my parents.

As a girl in Northwest Arkansas, I would ride my bike to nearby garage sales and bring home vintage china tied to my bicycle seat! And I loved playing dress up. My aunt’s 50’s prom dress became my princess gown. In putting on my grandmother’s gloves and rhinestone jewelry, I was transformed to a movie star. That appreciation grew into a passion for the beauty of a bygone era, where there was an attention to detail and quality. As an avid collector for over 40 years, I am now redirecting to offer hand crafted gifts and nostalgic and vintage treasures to bring beauty to the lives and homes of my customers.

… and the art

Leather Butterflies began as a beautiful memory shared by a dear friend. This friend had gone through many struggles, abuses and challenges in life. Her elderly mother had gifted her a butterfly brooch made of leather, and said “This represents you: You are as delicate as a butterfly, but as tough as an old saddle!”

Her story spoke to me and reminded me that the journey of a butterfly involves stages of transformation - some in the dark and some quite messy.  That little worm has no idea what it will go through to become the beautiful butterfly in the end. Life is hard sometimes, but because of my faith in Jesus, I know He strengthens me to be able to overcome the toughest of obstacles.

I love what Colossians 1:11-12 says about the strength that God gives (in the Message translation): “It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy, thanking the Father who makes us strong enough to take part in everything bright and beautiful that He has for us.”

Leather Butterflies is also committed to supporting the recovery of the abused, and a portion of my sales will be donated to the Justice Residences, the first long-term restoration home, and a place of deliverance, healing and restoration for survivors of human trafficking, The Justice Reform.
